Kaskaskia, Illinois: Liberty Bell of the West

We drove through beautiful farm country and back roads to find the Liberty Bell of the West. It was given to the Catholic Church by King Louis XV of France. I got some gorgeous pictures of the farm surrounding this quaint little Catholic church. It is worth the drive!

Jeeping Capital of the World

Ouray claims to be the Jeeping capital of the world. I don't know if that's true, but there are many fun Jeep trails to try from easy to difficult. We were even told at the Visitor's Center that someone in a BMW had to get airlifted out after getting stuck to the tune of $12k. Ouch! All of the trails cut through many parts of the San Juan Mountains with old and current mines that can be seen and toured along the way. Curtis was pretty excited about trying a moderate trail after the Old Fall River Road in the Rocky Mountains. We started our day off by driving to Box Canyon Falls.  This is a pretty easy hike just south of Ouray.  The High Bridge Trail is part of the Perimeter Trail around Ouray.  It takes you to the top of the Canyon where there is a grated bridge that gives you beautiful views of the valley below that leads to a tunnel. Day 6: Lake MacDonald, Glacier National Park

For our first Glacier adventure day, we decided to go to Lake MacDonald today.  It is on the west side of Glacier National Park.  The lodge is very rustic and has an alpine, Swiss chalet look to it. We took a boat ride tour that left from the dock behind the lodge.  It was so hot today (90 degrees!), but the wind on the boat was very cool.  I almost fell asleep on the ride.  The boat ride goes along Lake MacDonald and explains the history behind the lodge and surrounding areas. The park guide said that the lake is 500 feet deep and gets it's turquoise color from the glaciers grinding the rocks into fine, almost talcum like powder, sediments.  He also told us of the fires that have occurred.  You can see the fire line in the trees.  Some of the land around Lake MacDonald is privately owned from old homesteads that have been passed down through generations.   We decided to let my nephew play in the cold, cold ...

Viva Las Vegas!

Curtis and I are off on another adventure.  This one was a gift. A friend of mine gave me free airline tickets that she couldn't use. We tried to go to Fairbanks to see the Northern Lights,  but couldn't work out the flights unless we wanted to go for three weeks...which sounded great to me. But pretty sure my boss might not agree. So we decided to go to Las Vegas.  I was a little unsure what we would do in Vegas for a week until I realized how close Vegas is to The Grand Canyon,  Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. And let's not forget the engineering marvel that is Hoover Dam!  Thank you Google Maps!! We started our adventure in Las Vegas. Our flights were really good for free tickets. The weather is great! We stayed at The Bellagio for our first night. I was very excited about seeing the strip. The Bellagio is very impressive.                        ...
