Mount Rushmore National Memorial

We drove to see Mount Rushmore today! We saw it as we drove up the mountain.

View from road

As you enter from the parking lot, the monument is framed by columns and the path leading into the main viewing terrace is lined by the flags of all 50 states.

You can see George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.  The interesting fact is that Jefferson was supposed to be on the other side of Washington, but after carving his face, they ran into a fissure and couldn't continue. So they had to blow off his face and start over on the other side. You can see traces of where it was, like eraser marks, if you look hard.

Curtis and I walked along the Presidential Trail which lead up the hillside.  It was a beautiful walk and gave you different views of the monument.
Roosevelt is sort of hidden at certain views.

At the end of the walk, I took a picture of the Kansas and Alabama flags along with their markers.

This is definitely a worthwhile trip. We all joked that we can mark that off our bucket list! It is truly an amazing site in person!
