Day 9: Polebridge, Montana

Curtis had seen a Jeep trail that he read about in Glacier National Park that he wanted to take.  So after our hike to Avalanche Lake, we decided to drive to Polebridge.  It starts in the park and heads north on the opposite side of  Lake MacDonald that Going to the Sun Road is on.  It's a dirt path up toward the Canadian border.

Polebridge is just a tiny town (probably more like an Incorporation then a town) with one Mercantile and one fire station.  The area had a bunch of cabins that looked like you could rent them.  So we stopped at the Polebridge Mercantile, took the obligatory picture, bought some pastries and hopped back into the Jeep.  We tried to find a few lakes off of the road, but we couldn't find the turn offs.  So when we got to the sign that said "Canadian Border 8" this way, we looked at each other and just kept going.  We both wanted to see what the border would look like on that dirt road.  I started to get concerned that we'd accidentally cross into Canada since we left our passports in the RV. Curtis kept telling me it would be marked and not to worry.  And he was right.  It was the most simple border I'd ever seen.  There didn't seem to be anyone around.  I'm sure there was someone in the ranger station.  But no one came out to see what we were doing.  So he took a picture of me in the Jeep at the border.  And we headed back.  It was a beautiful drive with mountains on both sides of us, quite different from Going to the Sun Road, but still pretty.  I did take a picture of the burned trees from the fires that they had here in the area.
